Mantis shrimp are strong swimmers and use their pleopods for transportation.

S. empusa has a complex courtship and mating ritual.

They live in sand burrows with several openings.

Mantis shrimp see polarized light and four colors of ultraviolet light.

The animals are eaten in many countries but, this author finds the taste hard to like.

Mantis shrimp are considered to be a nuisance to commercial fishermen and basically have no commercial value.

Mantis shrimp have been assigned the nickname of "split thumb" by Florida’s shrimpers. Many shrimpers have been slashed by the stomapods.
