Large tree, up to 30 m tall.

Buds covered with reddish scales.

Leaves 2-3 per fascicle, dark green, glossy, 17-25 cm long.

Female cones 6-14 cm long, reddish brown, glossy, on stalks 2-2.5 cm long, releasing seeds in the fall.

Pollen cones cylindric 3-4 cm long, purplish, shedding pollen in Jan.-Feb.

Habitat:

Lowland to upland forests and old fields.

Distribution:

Southeastern South Carolina, Georgia, across north Florida to Louisiana.
