Uses: The starchy stems were used by Indians to prepare a flour for bread-making. The ground material had to be boiled and leached to remove toxic compounds and make the material safe for eating. The early Seminoles called the plant "Conte Hateka" which means white root or white bread-plant. The seeds are also edible but must be boiled to remove the toxins. |
