- Derby is a Professor of Sculpture and Design at Florida Community College at Jacksonville.
- Derby graduated from Florida State University with a Master of Art in Higher Education in Studio Art. Derby has also studied art at Rhode Island School of Design,
University of Georgia, University of Tennessee, and Jacksonville University.Derby has served as president of the Jacksonville Jaycees.Derby illustrated the book, Jokes,
Riddles and Wisdom, by Roger Kuder.Derby's Bob Hope elephant sculpture was added to Mr. Hope's permanent collection in 1977.

- One of Derby's commissions, a sculpture of a runner, was unveiled
March 1, 2002. It permanently resides in front of North
Florida's largest hotel, the Adams Mark in downtown Jacksonville.
