The More Things Change
I am a 34-year faculty member, and in that time have seen many things change—and many others remain the same. I was the first President of the Faculty Senate, and the last Chairman of the old Faculty Affairs Committee. During that time, I have dealt at various levels with five different college presidents. With only one exception, they have been top-down, Theory X managers in the classic autocratic mold. With that one exception, the very word "collegiality" loses its meaning outside of some Orwellian NEWSPEAK context.
The arrival of collective bargaining will institute for the first time in the history of the college a means of allowing ALL faculty members to have the opportunity to vote on issues critical to their professional lives. The Senate was, and is, a puppet show, occasionally receiving a bone if and when management thinks it expedient.
A "no" vote on Apr. 3-4 is a vote for no voice and no change, so I'm voting "yes."
