Kindness of Strangers
I'm voting for the union because, in the history of FCCJ, we have always depended (like Blanche Dubois) on the "kindness of strangers." In the seven administrations of the college, only one has been benign to faculty. The others have been indifferent or downright hostile to teaching and to teachers. No other force but the union allows faculty to present its views in a forceful manner. Collective bargaining is simply superior to individual teachers depending on the "kindness of strangers." The current malaise arising from salary freezes and teaching loads should make that point clear to anyone.
