Exercise 2

After reading Lesson 2, answer the following questions in your own words. Please include your full name and the answers in the body of an e-mail message with the Lesson number in the subject line  of an email addressed to me at JJohnson@fccj.org.

 

Exercise Two is worth a total of 12 points.

  1. (1 point) Use WhoWhere? to locate my email address (Judith J.  Johnson). List all email addresses given.
  2. (1 point) Use WhoWhere? to look up your email address. Could you find it? Please write a short answer exploring why you think you could or could not find your email address.
  3. (1 point) Go to InfoSpace and select "City Guide" under the Reference heading. Click on the "Government" subheading. Use the "Search by Location" option to limit your search to the County and State of your choice. What is the title, name, address, and phone number of one of the local officials listed?
  4. (1 point) Browse or search the Stroud's CWSApps site to find a list of tools which support streaming audio files. (Note: 32 bit programs are written for Windows 95/98/NT, 16 bit programs for Windows 3.x.) Which application would you choose based on Stroud's reviews?
  5. (2 points) Go to TUCOWS. Select your operating system (WIndows 95, Windows NT, MacIntosh, etc). Connect to the closest site to you, then find compression software. What freeware program would you choose? Why? Which Shareware program would you buy? Why?
  6. (1 point) According to Arlene Rinaldi's "The Net: User Guidelines and Netiquette," what do her rules for Electronic Communications recommend as a line length?
  7. (1 point) Go to L-Soft's CataList. Click on "View lists with 10,000 subscribers or more." Browse to see types of listservs available. Choose three that look interesting to you. List the names and topics of three you chose.
  8. (1 point) Choose one listserv of interest from above. Click on list name. From the information given there and within the Lesson 2 reading, how would you subscribe to the mailing list/listserv?
  9. (1 point) What is a Usenet posting?
  10. (1 point) Use Deja.com to find a Usenet posting on a topic of your choice. (Choose "Discussion Search" from the main page; perform a search for topic of interest such as "cats;" choose a discussion forum closest to your topic.) List one discussion forum you found.
  11. (1 point) What is the difference between a discussion board/Usenet posting and a chat room?
