Exercise 4

After reading Lesson 4, answer the following questions in your own words. Please include your full name and the answers in the body of an e-mail message with the Lesson number in the subject line  of an email addressed to me at JJohnson@fccj.org.

 

Exercise 4 is worth a total of 15 points.

Use Go.com to answer questions 1-4. Read "How to Search" before creating a search statement.

1.      (1 point) Devise and execute an effective search to find the searchable database of job openings entitled "America's Job Bank." It is produced by state agencies and the Department of Labor. What was your search statement, and what is the complete URL for America's Job Bank?

  1. (1 point) Did Go.com provide links to related topics? If so, what topics?
  2. (1 point) Search America's Job Bank and find a job of interest to you. List the employer, city, state, and job title of one job you found.
  3. (1 point) Using Go.com, find a news article discussing advancements in the treatment of cancer. Provide your search statement and complete URL of a recent article discussing some aspect of this topic ( example: a new drug, a new procedure, etc.)

Use HotBot to answer questions 5 & 6. Read the Search Tips before creating a search statement.

  1. (1 point) Find a picture of the Eiffel Tower. Provide your search statement and also the complete URL for the picture.
  2. (1 point) Using HotBot, find a document which provides tips for writing an effective resume. Provide your search statement and the complete URL for the item you found.

Use AltaVista to answer questions 7-10. Read the Help Files before creating a search statement.

  1. (1 point) Step 1: Find information about the Americans with Disabilities Act. Be sure the document is from a government web site. (Hint: Read about limiting to a certain domain in the AltaVista Search Help). What was your search statement?
  2. (1 point) Step 2: Revise your search so Americans with Disabilities Act appears in the title of the government-hosted document. What was your search statement?
  3. (1 point) Using AltaVista, find a video clip of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. What was your search statement? What is the URL of the site on which you found the clip?
  4. (1 point) Find information about water pollution, but exclude documents containing the term "ocean" and/or "oceans." Provide the complete URL for the AltaVista results page. (Cut and paste the URL).
  5. (3 points) Devise and execute an effective search using ANY of the search engines listed in Lesson 4 to find an informative Web site on each of the following:

a. scholarships in your chosen field.

 

b. tips for recycling at home.

For EACH item above, provide the name of search engine, your search statement, and the complete URL of a Web site which answered your query.

  1. (2 points) Repeat a search of the subjects you used in the last questions using one of the meta-search tools listed in Lesson 4 (Ask Jeeves, DogPile, MetaCrawler, etc.)

Compare these meta-search engine results with the results of your search using one of the search engines used in the last question.

Which search gave more relevant results?

Did you get a variety of results from the meta-search engine, or were there a lot of duplicate sites?
