WELCOME TO EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE (GLY1001)

Earth and Space Science is the study of the physical properties and events of our planet-Earth and the surrounding space. In reality, the Earth is not just divided in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biology, etc. The Earth is an integration of all its various parts. This course treats the Earth as a ‘whole’ using the Earth Systems as an integration tool. The objectives of this course are:

1. Distinguish between facts, theories and beliefs.

2. Understand how chemicals bond to form minerals and the atmosphere.

3. Understand Earth’s materials-minerals and rocks.

4. Understand Geologic Time and the development of life through time.

5. Understand Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics. Learn the interrelationship between Plate Tectonics and the distribution of Plants and Animals.

6. Understand Volcanoes, Earthquakes and the Earth’s internal processes.

7. Identify Geologic Structures.

8. Understand Earth’s external processes and events, such as groundwater movement, river flow, glacial development and deserts, in relation to Homo sapiens.

9. Understand Ocean processes.

10. Look at geological processes on other planets.

11. Understand the atmospheric processes.

Testing: The purpose of testing is to determine how much material the students are learning from the class. Thus, the test questions will not be tricky. The questions will be a combination of multiple choice, true-false, matching, short answer and essay. Since this is an online class, the tests are mainly essay. There will be four 100 point major tests. These tests will be take-home tests. All tests must be passed to pass the class.

Quizzes:  There are four 25 point quizzes plus a 10 (extra credit) point quiz on the syllabus and orientation to be taken online.  Be sure to read the book, lectures and watch the CD ROM as well as do your assignments before taking these quizzes.  Your instructor will give further instruction about these quizzes. The quizzes on the CD ROM are for your benefit; do not send them in to the instructor.  The CD ROM will be used on tests and to answer questions for the online quizzes.

Term Paper (100 points): There will be a term paper. For the due date, please check on the Schedule on the WebCT class.

The paper will consist of at least (70 Points) two single spaced pages about a scientific show on a subject within Earth and Space Science. You may get a video from the library, video store or watch one on TV. The show must be at least 1 hour long. The format for the paper will be: single spaced, 1" MARGINS AND 12 FONT SIZE.

Participation:  There will be 100 points available for the participation grade.  Each student will be required to post, on the Bulletin Board, 7 discussions on a recent Earth and Space Science topic. This will be worth 70 points of the 100 points. It must contain scientific data and may not duplicate what a previous student has posted.  Each student must read all of the other student's discussion, to insure they are not duplicating another discussion.  The same topic, with updated material is acceptable.  Not more than 2 postings per student per week will be accepted for this grade.  Space out the discussions, please.

Twenty more points of the participation grade will be based on Bulletin Board interaction.  Please post questions and answers the other student's questions when needed.

The last 10 points will be awarded to those students that turn their tests and assignments in on time.  Any papers received after the beginning (Monday) of the 16th week of the class, will not be accepted.  A grade of "F" will be assigned.

Assignments: There will be fifteen (15) 20 point assignments due. The virtual assignments give you a certificate of completion that you can send in. These will not require much time, but must be completed each week. All of the assignments must be returned to your instructor per their instructions.  Dr. Moody's students must send all assignment by mail of hand deliver them.  All assignments must be hand written for Dr. Moody.

Dr.Moody’s address:

You will want to, and be expected to, communicate with other students and Dr. Moody in the chat room on the WebCT class site. E-mail can also be sent in-house to other students in the class. FCCJ Policy: Students with an entering date of 1997 or later may have only three attempts per college credit course including the original grade, repeat grades, and withdrawals at any point in the semester.  A fourth attempt may be allowed only through established institutional procedures.  The student will be permitted a maximum of two withdrawals per college credit course.  A student may withdraw without academic penalty from any course be the withdrawal deadline for the semester.  Withdrawals after that date would be granted only through established institutional procedures.  Upon the third attempt at a course, the student will not be permitted to withdraw and will receive a grade for that course.  A student cannot repeat a course when a grade of A, B or C has been earned.

Beginning fall semester, 1997, according to guidelines established by Florida HB 1545, all students may enroll in a specific college credit course only twice at the regular tuition rate.  If the first two attempts are unsuccessful (all grades will count as an attempt, including audit, IW, AW, W, NP, F and D), the third time a student enrolls in the course he/she must pay the full cost of instruction.  This cost is equivalent to the out-of-state.
