WELCOME TO EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE (GLY1001)

Earth and Space Science is the study of the physical properties and events of our planet-Earth and the surrounding space. In reality, the Earth is not just divided in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biology, etc. The Earth is an integration of all its various parts. This course treats the Earth as a whole, using the Earth Systems as an integration tool. The objectives of this course are:

1. Distinguish between facts, theories and beliefs.

2. Understand how chemicals bond to form minerals and the atmosphere.

3. Understand Earth’s materials-minerals and rocks.

4. Understand Geologic Time and the development of life through time.

5. Understand Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics. Learn the interrelationship between Plate Tectonics and the distribution of Plants and Animals.

6. Understand Volcanoes, Earthquakes and the Earth’s internal processes.

7. Identify Geologic Structures.

8. Understand Earth’s external processes and events, such as groundwater movement, river flow, glacial development and deserts, in relation to Homo sapiens.

9. Understand Ocean processes.

10. Look at geological processes on other planets.

11. Understand the atmospheric processes.

Testing: The purpose of testing is to determine how much material the students are learning from the class. Thus, the test questions will not be tricky. The questions will be a combination of multiple choice, true-false, matching, short answer and essay. There will be two (2) options for you: Option 1, 3 take-home tests, or Option 2, 3 online tests. There will be three 100 point major tests. These tests may be take-home tests or online tests.  The take-home test will require 10-12 hours to complete. An example of an essay question is, “Explain, in detail, how Bowen’s Reaction Series is related to the classification of igneous rocks.”  To satisfy this question, you must be sure to read the book, online lectures and the CD-ROM. A key here is “in detail”…this does not mean one sentence.  The online tests will require 15 hours study time to prepare.  The option is yours.  There will not be time to use your book on the online tests. They are closed book.  If you print the questions, it will be considered cheating and your grade will be a “0” for the course. All tests must be passed to pass the class.

Quizzes:  There are four 25 point quizzes plus a 10 (extra credit) point quiz on the syllabus and orientation to be taken online.  Be sure to read the book, lectures and watch the CD ROM as well as do your assignments before taking these quizzes.  Your instructor will give further instruction about these quizzes. The quizzes on the CD ROM are for your benefit; do not send them to the instructor unless instructed to do so. The CD ROM will be used on tests and to answer questions for the online quizzes.

Term Paper (100 points): There will be a term paper. For the due date, please check on the Schedule on the WebCT course page. The paper will consist of at least (70 Points) two single spaced pages about a scientific show on a subject within Earth and Space Science. You may get a video from the library, video store or watch one on TV. The show must be at least 1 hour long. The format for the paper will be: single spaced, 1" MARGINS AND 12 FONT SIZE.

Participation: There will be 100 points available for the participation grade. Each student will be required to post, on the Bulletin Board, 4 discussions on a recent Earth and Space Science topic. This will be worth 70 points of the 100 points. It must contain scientific data and may not duplicate what a previous student has posted.  Each student must read all of the other student's discussion, to insure they are not duplicating another discussion. The same topic, with updated material is acceptable. Not more than 2 postings per student per week will be accepted for this grade. Space out the discussions, please.

Twenty more points of the participation grade will be based on Bulletin Board interaction. Please post questions and answers the other student's questions when needed.

The last 10 points will be awarded to those students that turn their tests and assignments in on time. Any papers received after the beginning (Monday) of the 16th week of the class, will not be accepted. A grade of "F" will be assigned.

Assignments: There will be nine to fifteen (9-15) 20 point assignments due depending on the length of the term. Check the appropriate schedule below. The virtual assignments give you a certificate of completion that you can send in. These will not require much time, but must be completed each week. All of the assignments must be returned to your instructor per their instructions. Dr. Moody's students must send all assignment by mail. All assignments must be hand written for Dr. Moody.

Technical Requirements: Each student must have access to a computer that can access the Internet, a word processing software package that at least contains word processing and spreadsheet capabilities (Word/Excel or Word Perfect/Lotus), Adobe Reader, CDROM capability and e-mail access that you can receive and send attachments. The student must also know how to use the equipment. A printer that is at least laser quality will also be needed. If you need a free download of Adobe Reader, go to: http://web.fccj.org/~umoody and follow the directions there. If AOL is your server, you will need a different server for the duration of this class.

Learning Online: Each student will be required to read and study all text materials and study all lecture materials each week. There will be suggested Internet work that will enhance your understanding of each subject covered for the student to complete each week. Assignments will be due each week. Late papers will not be accepted after the beginning of the 16th  (or 12th ) week of class. You will want to, and be expected to, communicate with other students and Dr. Moody in the chat room on the WebCT class site. E-mail can also be sent in-house to other students in the class. Dr. Moody will send, by e-mail, instructions on how to navigate the WebCT site to all students that have registered and paid for the class.

Plagiarism:  Plagiarism is grounds for dismissal from FCCJ.  Any cutting and pasting of material, or the changing of a few words will constitute plagiarism.  Put everything in your own words.  Students may not copy each others work.  This will be considered cheating.  All cheating and/or plagiarism will be handled by the giving of an “F” for the course.

Rules For Online Dialogue:

1.Always be polite.

2.Try to make positive comment, even if you do not fully agree with the teacher or other student.

3.Do not give out any personal data. You may e-mail each other through the WebCT site. There is no need to give out your personal e-mail address to any other student.

4.Access the discussion groups at least once a week. Don’t get behind in your assignments.
